Edition Notes

This "third edition" is a small folio facsimile on unwatermarked paper with the "1813" title-page set out as in the "second edition" but with text completely reset line-for-line and printed for John Camden Hotten in 1870. The [1870] folio copies have the plates in the midst of the poem, while the 1813 edition has them gathered together at the end. The order of the plates in the small [1870] folio is normally different from that of the 1808 editions. Cf. Bentley.

Bound in fine grain dark brown publisher's cloth binding, blind stamped with three framing lines, decorative corners with stylized ivy leaves, large cartouche of fronds, arabesques centre of both covers. Spine blind stamped with decorative motifs, stamped in gold Blair's Grave 12 Etchings by Blake.

Includes a dedicatory poem "To the Queen" by William Blake (p. [iii]); List of subscribers (p. [vii-xiv]); an Advertisement, dated 1808, by R.H. Cromek (p. [i-ii]; remarks by Henry Fuseli (p. v-vi); an essay entitled: Of the designs by B.H. Malkin (p. [39]-42); a Biographical sketch of Robert Blair ([xv]-xxix); a Biographical sketch of Lewis Schiavonetti (p. [xxxi]-xliv); and a Biographical sketch of Robert Hartley Cromek (p. [xlv]-liv).

Added t.p., engraved and illustrated: The grave : a poem / illustrated by twelve etchings executed by Louis Schiavonetti, from the original inventions of William Blake, 1808.

All of the plates are inscribed: "London, Published Mar. Ist 1813, by R. Ackermann, Strand".
