Das Phänomen schrumpfender Städte konfrontiert uns mit Einwohnerrückgang, Wohnungsleerstand oder dem Wegfall von Betrieben in dramatischem Ausmaß. Es stellt sich die Frage nach dem Um- und Rückbau von leer stehenden Wohnbauten und dem Umgang mit Industrie- und Gewerbebrachen. In dieser Situation eines tiefgreifenden wirtschaftlichen Strukturwandels ist ein Stadtumbau gefordert, der besondere ortsspezifische, integrative und zukunftsweisende Lösungen bereitstellt, um die einschneidenden Veränderungen bewusst zu gestalten. Dass es dafür bereits eine Vielzahl interessanter Beispiele gibt, geplante wie realisierte, verdeutlicht diese Publikation in Text und Bild. In ausgewählten Beiträgen der Veranstaltungsreihe „Tatort Stadt“ erläutern Planer, Vertreter aus Wissenschaft und Lehre, aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Verwaltung wesentliche Aspekte. Dieses Buch zeigt, dass „Stadtumbau" weit mehr als ein beschönigender Begriff für Abriss sein kann: Für Architekten, Ingenieure, Landschafts- und Städteplaner – vor allem der nächsten Generation – ist er ein anspruchsvolles Aufgabenfeld mit hohem Potential und breiter Perspektive.
