L'enfance de Robert Attal a été marquée par une tragédie : l'assassinat de son père sous ses yeux pendant les émeutes raciales de 1934. Réfugié avec sa mère et sa soeur dans le quartier juif de Constantine, il raconte la guerre avec les lois antisémites de Vichy et la solidarité du ghetto, puis la vie de son quartier, avec ses odeurs, ses couleurs, ses bruits, ses passions et ses drames. Et c'est encore la guerre dont la phase finale fut très violente à Constantine, et le départ des Juifs, enracinés pourtant dans l'histoire millénaire de l'Afrique du Nord.
