Edition Notes
Date based on form of publisher's name and address. Cf. Topp, Chester W. Victorian yellowbacks & paperbacks, Vol. I, 1993.
"A new edition of the "Boy's Playbook of Science" having been called for while the Author was at the antipodes, the publishers intrusted me with the work of revision. My position as Lecturer on Science, and Assistant Superintendent of the Institution with which Professor Pepper's name has so long been associated, has given me the advantage of being able to follow his track more closely perhaps than an outsider could have done. In carrying out my task I have naturally refrained from altering any of the original work, except so far as progress in Science has rendered absolutely necessary."--Reviser's Preface.
Includes "Introduction to the Original Edition.": p. [1]-2.
Most wood-engraved illustrations and plates are unsigned. Some are signed "T. Collings" and a few are signed as engraved by Edmund Evans. One each is signed "Richardson Sc." [i.e. Joseph Teale Richardson?], "T. P. Collings & Co.", "Peroy" and "Crosscup & West Pix".
With many of the same wood-engraved illustrations as used in the "New edition" of "The boy's playbook of science" published in 1862 by Routledge, Warne, and Routledge and printed by Savill and Edwards. See McLean D 0834.
Includes "Index.": p. 501-506.
Publisher's advertisements on t. p. verso and p. [1-2] at end.
MASS copy: Bound in light blue fine diagonal rib-grain cloth blocked in gold, black, light turquoise and blind. Lower cover blocked in blind with publisher's monogram: "GR&S". Spine with imprint: "Routledge". Boards with bevelled edges. With black endpapers.
