The first poem is an English version of a traditional Maori creation narrative, which first appeared (untitled, with first line: From the conception the increase) in: Te ika a Maui, or, New Zealand and its inhabitants / Richard Taylor. London, 1855. P. 14-15. The second is a translation by Beatrice Shirley Baker of a recitative spoken in Tongan by Taufa; the original (untitled, with first line: Ke fanongo mai e tama hiva ni) and translation were first published in: Tongan myths and tales / compiled by Edward Winslow Gifford. Honolulu, 1924. P. 18.
