The previous editions were a reissue of a weekly periodical, The Straggling astrologer, no. 1-22, June 5-Oct. 30, 1824. This edition is totally reworked, and much enlarged.

Illustrations: Added engraved hand-colored title-page by Fenner; 4 full-page hand-colored mezzotint plates, one credited to George Russell after Mr. Fussel [i.e. Henry Fuseli] ; 90 engraved vignettes throughout.

Dedication: "To the author of Waverley..." -- p. iii.

Includes The necromancer, a translation of Karl Friedrich Kahlert's gothic novel, Der Geisterbanner -- p. 1-127.
