"Presenting both conceptual analysis and empirical case studies, the first section of the book examines the rise of good governance in the Canadian aid agenda and the changing international setting in which this has occurred. These chapters probe the shifting international politics of aid; the evolution of the concept of "good governance" in aid agencies; the history of Canada's evolving aid priorities; the organization of Canadian aid; and the prospects of greater international co-operation on development assistance. The second section presents case studies of six nations. Three are countries to which Canada has devoted a significant portion of its aid efforts over the past five to ten years: Ghana, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. Two are newer and more complex "fragile states" in which Canada has engaged: Haiti and Afghanistan. These five are then compared with Mauritius, which has enjoyed relatively good governance.
