Edition Notes

Cover title.

Added illustrated t.p. (in part 1).

Large paper impression issued in 6 bound numbered parts, with some evidence of resetting compared to small paper impression in parts. Preface printed in red and black, with additional headpiece and initial. Hand-colouring more highly finished, and with the addition of gold. Lacks the temporary table of contents found in the small paper parts.

Cover imprint dated 1841. Each part consists of 32 pages of text and 16 plates (the equivalent of 4 of the small paper parts). Part 6 also includes title pages (dated 1843), tables of contents, and introductory text. Tables of contents included in supplement indicate the final order of text and plates as they were intended to be bound into two volumes, which differs from the order in which they were issued in the parts.

Cover illustration signed: Mary Byfield.

Most plates are hand-coloured aquatints; also includes six colour-printed wood engraved plates as well as colour-printed cuts and initials throughout the text.

MASS copy: With ms notation on endpaper: An original subscribers copy as issued in parts. Bound in maroon cloth with printed paper label consisting of cover to the paper parts. Parts 1-2 bound in diaper grain cloth; parts 3-6 bound in ribbed grain cloth.
