Edition Notes

Author supplied by H&L and ESTC; H&L has note: 'Wrongly attributed to Matthew Tindal'.

The DNB records that Anthony Collins, deist, published 'Priescraft in Perfection' ... a pamphlet in which he argues that the clause in the 20th of the Thirty-nine Articles, declaring that 'the church has power to decree rites and ceremonies and authorityin controversies of faith', had been fraudulently inserted. Two more editions were published in 1710, and 'reflections' (by Collins) in defence of the original pamphlet against opponents'.

The 'Preface' dated: 'London, Jan. 1. 1709'; note at end of main text, page 49: 'Whoever desire Satisfaction as to any of the Citations refer'd to in the foregoing Tract, may repair to Mr. John Darby Printer in Bartholomew-Close, where the Books from whence they are taken shall be left at their Request'; on verso: 'Advertisement to all True Lovers of the Old English Constitution', and on following unnumbered page, recto and verso, a list of 'Books Sold by John Darby in Bartholomew-Close'.

ESTC 3260C22 [under Collins]; ESTC3639P3 [under title]; ESTC1129E9 [under Church of England, Articles of Religion. Appdx].
