Edition Notes

Dedicatory letter addressed: 'To the V. C--------r of O.......[sic]d. And the Heads and Governors of Colleges and Halls, by whatsoever Names or Titles dignify'd or distinguished', and signed: 'From the Elysian Fields, Aug. 20th, 1713. Terrae-Filius'; final leaf, [E4], is blank.

H&L and NUC attribute this pamphlet to Sir John Willes, D.C.L. [H&L], 'reporter' [NUC], the chief justice of the common pleas, [DNB], b. 1685, d. 1761; B.L. enters his work under 'Terrae-Filius'; ESTC has entries under 'Willes' and 'Terrae-Filius'; the DNB article on Sir John Willes does not list this pamphlet among his works, but gives the following account of him: 'On 20 Jan. 1708 he entered at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar in June 1713 and joined the Oxford circuit. Though a man of "splendidabilities" and grave demeanour, he was loose and indolent, and took more interest in politics than in law. ... Though politically an unscrupulous intriguer, he was a lawyer of great learning and a judge of ability'.

Half-title leaf reads: 'The Speech that was intended to have been spoken By the Terrae-Filius'; caption title: 'The very self same Speech that was to have been Spoken by the Terrae-Filius, in the Theatre at O----d, July 13. 1713'.

ESTC599T1 [under Terrae-Filius]; ESTC2156W3 [under Willes].
