First Sentence

"This study has two objectives. The first is to forge conceptual tools for the examination of a hitherto neglected area of South Asian social history: the history of how people and goods circulated through the subcontinent and of the infrastructures that facilitated such movements. The second objective consists in an empirical reconstruction of major tendencies in the social history of transport in one Indian region: the transformation of Orissa’s circulatory regime from the final decades of the precolonial era until after World War I."
