John Melville Bishop is primarily known as a documentary filmmaker in the areas of anthropology and folklore. His best known films are The Land Where the Blues Began made with Alan Lomax, Himalayan Herders following up on his book An Ever-Changing Place, and Oh What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me based on the book by Edmund Carpenter. He lived in Boston 1974-1990, Los Angeles 1990-2007, and currently resides in Portland, OR. He taught video production and ethnographic film at UCLA from 1995-2008. As of 2010 he is writing a book about ethnographic film.
