Dudley George Cary-Elwes

Captain Dudley George Cary-Elwes was born in Lincolnshire, England, in the home that had belonged to his family for three centuries. His name, Elwes, was derived from the Norse which was originally "Helwys". He recieved a good education and in 1857 obtained a commission in His Majesty's Third Infantry. He sold his commission in 1862 and retired from the military. In 1863 he married Mary Georgina Mangles, living at Wolverton, a flourshing town of Buckinghamshire, where he helped organize a system of dispensaries for rural districts. In 1869 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians, London. He is the author of History of the Castles, Mansions, and Manors of Western Sussex (1879). In 1886 he left with his family for Lake Fredrica, Florida. Eventually he moved to Orlando, in the Conway area. He was instrumental in building the Orlando Protestant Episcopal Church and was one of the foremost binding influences in the growing English colony. He organized the South Florida Manufacturing Company.
