Alexandre Herculano was a Portuguese historian, novelist, and poet, one of the writers who is credited with introducing Romanticism to Portugal. As a historian, he was a leader of liberal opinion, enjoying a national prestige comparable to that of Victor Hugo in France.

Como liberal que era, teve como preocupação maior, estabelecida nas suas ações políticas e seus escritos, sobretudo em condenar o absolutismo e a intolerância da coroa no século XVI para denunciar o perigo do retorno a um centralismo da monarquia em Portugal.
