Nigel Honorius Hurt Sitwell (N H H Sitwell) was born in Bombay (Mumbai) in India in 1948. He was educated at Eton, King's College Cambridge and University College, London. At London he read archaeology, and he would write two books: Roman Roads Of Europe (Cassell, 1981) and The World The Romans Knew (Hamish Hamilton, 1984), which was later republished under the title Outside The Empire.
In 1974 he married Elizabeth Mozley, daughter of the artist Charles Mozley. They had one son and one daughter.
Nigel Sitwell died of influenza at his home in Kew near London, England in December 1999.
