Frank Castle

Frank Castle was born and raised in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He apprenticed with an engineering and tool-making company there, where he made improvements to grinding machinery. In 1883, he became an assistant professor in the mechanics and mathematics division of the Royal College of Science in South Kensington, and he stayed there for twenty-six years. He was instrumental in the introduction of practical mathematics into the curriculum, and in 1899 he published Practical Mathematics for Technical Students, followed in 1901 by Practical Mathematics for Beginners and in 1903 by A Manual of Practical Mathematics. He also wrote about machine design and drawing, and several books of mathematical tables. He was for many years lecturer in mathematics at the Morley College, London, and at the time of his death was lecturer in practical mathematics, machine construction and drawing, building construction and applied mechanics at the Municipal Technical Institute, Eastbourne.
