Frances Hodgson Burnett was most known as a english playwright and author. She was born at Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England as Frances Eliza Hodgson. Her mother, Eliza Boond, and her father, Edwin Hodgson. She was the middle of 5 children, 2 older brothers, and 2 younger sisters.
Frances grew up in a quite comfortable life. Her family had a maid, a nurse-maid, and a horse and carriage. Her father had a job of selling brass goods to upper class homes.
But in the early 1850's when Frances was only 3-4 years old, her father died of a stroke. Her family was then forced to sell there home and move.
Because of her mother was left to carry on her husbands business, Frances was often left in the care of her grandmother who taught her to read.
This is where her career of writing was believed to begun.
When she was 16 years old and her family had recently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, she supported her family by publishing some of her stories in magazines ending all the way up til she was 19.
In September of 1873, she married Swan Burnett which they both moved to Paris for 2 years and had there two baby sons. One of these two sons, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1892 leaving Frances suffering with severe depression. In 1898, she divorced Swan Burnett and remarried 2 years later in 1900. This second marriage only lasted a year.
Frances settled into Long Island, New York where she lived for 17 years before dying in 1924. She was buried in Roslyn Cemetery in Greenvale, New York next to her other son, Vivian.
