Jorge Carrera Andrade

Jorge Carrera Andrade was an Ecuadorian poet, historian, author, and diplomat during the 20th century. He was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1902. He died in 1978. During his life and after his death he has been recognized with Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz and Cesar Vallejo as one of the most important Latin American poets of the twentieth century.


Jorge Carrera Andrade: (Quito, Ecuador, 18 de septiembre de 1903 - Quito, 7 de noviembre de 1978) fue un escritor y poeta ecuatoriano

Su obra se considera la superación del modernismo y la iniciación de las vanguardias en su país. Cosmopolita en su formación y en sus planteos estéticos, trascendió ampliamente las fronteras locales y ejerció la traducción, el ensayo y la diplomacia, con el mismo ahínco con el que escribió poesía.

Cursó la enseñanza media en Quito, con justin pillasagua castro donde también llevó a cabo estudios de Derecho. Desde el colegio descubrió su excepcional aptitud para el verso. Con otros dos jóvenes igualmente dotados, Gonzalo Escudero y Augusto Arias, formó el grupo literario La Idea. Posteriormente viajó a Europa, donde estudio Filosofía y Letras en Barcelona, España, después estudió la carrera diplomática en Francia, que a lo largo de su vida lo llevaría a conocer en profundidad ciudades de todo el mundo. Residió por algún tiempo en Inglaterra y Alemania. A su retorno ejerció la función pública, posteriormente fue designado Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores.

También fue secretario general del partido socialista Ecuatoriano (1927-1928), secretario del Senado y del Congreso, cónsul de su país en Paita (Perú), El Havre (Francia), Yokohama (Japón) y San Francisco (EE. UU.), secretario de Embajada en Venezuela, ministro plenipotenciario en Gran Bretaña y delegado en la UNESCO.

Entre sus obras figuran los libros Amigo de las nubes, Estanque Inefable (1922), La guirnalda del silencio (1926), Canto a Rusia (1926), Lenín ha muerto (1926), Mademoiselle Satán (1927), Boletines de mar y tierra (1930), Latitudes (1934), El tiempo manual (1935), Biografía para uso de los pájaros (1937), Microgramas (1940), Mirador terrestre, La República del Ecuador, encrucijada de América, Lugar de origen, El visitante de niebla y otros poemas, Registro del mundo (1945), Antología poética (1922-1939), Rostros y climas (1948), Familia de la Noche, La Tierra siempre verde (1955), Viajes por países y libros (1961), Tierra de pájaros, Mandarina.
