William A. Withington, born in Honolulu, Hawaii, was a graduate of Harvard University, and obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1955. Withington was a member of the Geography faculty of the University of Kentucky (1955-1989) whose research and teaching interests centered on urban and regional development in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. In 1964, he co-authored Asia, with focus on Southeast Asia with Margaret Fisher Hertel.
Withington was a Lexington-based member of the Kentucky Geographic Names Committee (Kentucky's affiliate with the U.S. Board of Geographic Names), and a long-time member of the American Association of Geographers. In 1980, he compiled Kentucky in Maps, which is still used by college classes throughout the state.
