In the 2014-15 GFRY Studio course led by Theaster Gates, students renovate an abandoned building on Chicago's South Side into a neighborhood performance center and meditation couryard. Using materials from a nearby demolished building and other found objects, they created the Back of House: St Laurence Monastery and Gardens while learning the techniques of design-build and DIT (do-it-together) projects from the initial designing stages to the opening of the installation/exhibition to the public.
