Overly-rosy description of the Missouri River Valley in east-central Missouri by Gottfried Duden, a lawyer from Remscheid in the Grand Ducy of Berg who lived in Warren County, Missouri from 1824-1827. The Report of a Journey to the Western States of North America, published in 1829, exerted a great deal of influence on potential emigrants from what are now the western Länder of Germany. A lot of Germans immigrated to the United States under the influence of Duden's description of mild weather and cheap, fertile land. A significant number of those immigrants came to regret their decision.
