Table of Contents

Putilov A.A. "Owls", "Larks" and Others: About Clocks Inside Us and Their Influence on Our Health and Character. Novosibirsk: Novosibirsk University Press; Moscow: Publishing House "Soverschenstvo", 1997, 264 pp.
The book reviews recent ideas and provocative observations of individual differences in human diurnal and seasonal rhythms. It contains various examples from diverse biological areas and several other disciplines, such as psychology, psychiatry, internal medicine, demography, and history. The book explains how does modern science answer to such intriguing questions as: Are we born with or are we developing under certain circumstances our own circadian types («owl» or «lark», short or long sleeper, and so on)? Do our diurnal and seasonal types change with advancing age? Do women differ from men on their sleep-wake patterns? Do the clocks «ticking» inside us affect our physique, temper, character, health, mood, professional and partner choice? What is the aim of sleep? What are the causes of insomnia, and how could we improve our sleep? Could we adjust rapidly to shift and night work, jet lag, time saving system, and short winter days? How could we regulate our biological rhythms and well-being by applying the natural time cues, such as bright light, physical exercise, sleep timing, and secretion of melatonin (“night hormone“)? What are the causes and the treatments of choice for seasonal and non-seasonal depression? Are human conception rate and personality linked to the lunar and annual light cycles? etc. Funny cartoons illustrate some ideas of the book. Appendix contains the questionnaire tools for determination of the circadian and seasonal types. The book appeals to the lay audience.
The second and the third editions were published as: Putilov A.A. "Owls", "Larks" and Other Humans: About Influence of the Internal Clocks on Health and Personality. 2nd Edn. Novosibirsk: Siberian University Press, 2003, 608 pp., and Putilov A.A. Recipes of Regular Sleep for "Owls" and "Larks" in Winter and Summer. 3nd Edn. Novosibirsk: Siberian University Press, 2005, 608 pp.
