A British military surgeon, known for making improvements to sanitary conditions and diet for both soldiers and civilians in the regions where he served, as well as being the first known European surgeon to perform a cesarean section which both mother and child survived.
After his death, a post-mortem examination (performed against his last wishes) revealed he was biologically female.
