Edition Notes

Signatures: Aa6, a-z6, A-F6.

Imprint from colophon. Colophon information supplied from BM.

The fourth edition. Cf. Goff.

The previous editions of this work ended at the Battle of Fornoue (1495). The present edition continues the narrative to the end of 1499, and provides more precise information on the geography of the French counties. While much of the detail is borrowed from the "Chroniques de Saint-Denis", it provides valuable information on the activities of the French in Italy. Besides the narrative, the work includes poetry and several letters addressed to Gaguin, including one from Erasmus who was Gaguin's student in Paris.

Engraved t.p. representing Sts Denis & Remy, with the royal arms, and the arms of the major dioceses of northern France, as well as of several of the provinces; the same illustration is repeated on the verso of leaf [4] at the end.

Leaf 1r (2nd group): In co[m]pendiu[m] de gestis francoru[m] praefatio. Roberti Gaguini ordinis s[an]ct[a]e trinitatis generalis Ministri in nouam co[m]pendii de francoru[m] gestis editione[m] praefatio.

Colophon (leaf [5r] at end): Impressit diligens ac p[er]itus chalcographus Thielma[n]nus keruer in inclyto parrisoru[m] gymnasio impe[n]sis optimoru[m] bibliopolarum Durandi gerlerii & Ioa[n]nis parui. Anno gr[atia]e ... M. quinge[n]tesimo. Ad idus ianuarias.

Goff, G-15.

BM 15th cent., VIII, 217.

Fisher copy: Initials unrealized. With contemporary marginal annotations throughout. Leaves 1-3, 6 (2nd group) and the final leaf partially mutilated. Colophon wanting. With a later engraved portrait of the author mounted on leaf 169v.
