Edition Notes

At head of title: Traditio Catholica. Sæculum III. Annus 397.

Series title varies slightly.

In v. 1, pt. 1, Vita et conversatio Ambrosii, also printed in the Addenda to the works of Symeon Metaphrastes in Migne's Patrologiae cursus completus, Series grae, v. 116, col. 861-882, is a compilation from Theodoret's Historia ecclesiastica. cf. Bardenhewer, Otto. Geschichte der altkirchlichen Literatur. 2. Aufl. Freiburg i. B., 1923. v. 3, p. 500.

In vol. 1, pt. 2, De excidio urbis Hierosolymitanae, transmitted with the works of Ambrosius, is a Latin recension of De bello judaico of Flavius Josephus.

In v. 2, pt. 1, the authorship of De lapsu virginis consecratae is possibly to be ascribed to Nicetas of Remesiana. cf. Bardenhewer, ibid., v. 3, p. 538.

Includes indexes.

Among the spurious and doubtful works in v. 2, pt. 2, Commentaria in epistolas b. Pauli, usually cited as the work of Ambrosiaster, has been ascribed to Isaac the Jew, to Decimus Hilarianus Hilarius, and to Evagrius, Eustathian bp. of Antioch. cf. Bardenhewer, ibid., v. 3, p. 677. De fide orthodoxa contra arianos is now ascribed to Gregorius, bp of Elvira. De moribus brachmanorum is also ascribed to Palladius. cf. Admonitio. Explanatio Symboli ad initiandos is also published as Sermo VII among the doubtful works of Maximus of Turin, in v. 57, col 853-858, of this series.

Includes Vita S. Ambrosii a Paulino.
