In this book, more than 160 epigraphical and papyrological texts providing evidence for veterans in the Roman Near East, 2nd-4th centuries A.D., are gathered together for the first time. These texts are analyzed using an approach that combines social history, economics, and cultural history. The study looks at veterans as a group with legal privileges, forming a link between the military world and the upper ranks of society. Veterans show a high degree of integration into society; for example, by moving into high social positions in the urban settlements of Roman Syria and the province of Arabia. Through the study of veterans in provincial Roman society, light is shed on economic and cultural processes in the military provinces of the Roman Near East.
