Edition Notes

Soares & Campos Ferreira Lima. Dic. de iconografia portuguesa, III, p. 59-60.
Title extracted from dedication on leaf [1].
Engraved throughout. Thirty plates mounted on stubs in a gold-stamped vellum binding, with gauffred edges.
Most of the plates are unsigned. Soares & Campos Ferreira Lima attributes them (except for the last portrait plate, which is signed by Franc. Rastaini) to Girolamo Rossi, who engraved the colophon.
For background on the De' Rossi, the leading producers of engravings in Rome in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, see Byblis : miroir des arts du livre et de l'estampe, année 6 (1927), p. 113-121.
The portrait plates are individually described in Soares & Campos Ferreira Lima under the following item numbers: 1456E, 22G, 2818C, 23E, 2819C, 24F, 1015Z, 25G, 2335F, 1117(B)C, 1537G, 1028F, 26H, 1538G, 1821L, 1539N, 2920N, 1455I, 1190L, 1191H, 1192L, 1540U, 27B, 2336V, 1541C, 1562D2 (variant?), 1831P.
The last 3 portrait plates were made much later than the date 1708 engraved in the colophon. The last one has several text lines blank for completion of the biography. Soares & Campos Ferreira Lima dates that plate 179?.
