The basic purpose of the Health Interview Survey is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the kind of health services people receive. Household variables in this data collection include type of living quarters, size of family, region, condition list assigned, and type of PSU. Person variables include sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activity. Also in the Person file are the Home Care Supplement variables which were used to define the need for personal (individual) home care as a result of a chronic health condition, as well as the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses and hearing aids. The Condition, Doctor Visit, and Hospital files contain information on each reported condition, two-week doctor visit, or hospitalization (twelve-month recall), respectively. This survey includes three supplements. A Smoking Supplement contains variables on smoking status, number of cigarettes smoked, length of time smoked, tar and nicotine levels, and attempts to quit smoking. The Residential Mobility Supplement asks questions concerning where the respondent lives, length of time at an address, number of moves, number of miles moved, and with whom the respondent lives.

Edition Notes
Survey data.
The Health Interview Surveys (HIS), a continuous sampling and interviewing of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of the United States, contain information on the social, demographic, and economic aspects of illness, disability, and medical services. Information on the utilization of medical care facilities is also available in the form of data on medical and dental care, hospitalization, preventive care, nursing care, prosthetic appliances, and self-care. The Health Interview Surveys are the primary instrument of a major National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data collection program.
The data contain amp (&), dash (-), and blank codes. A new condition recode, Recode 5, has been added to the condition record. It corresponds to the summary recode in the Ninth Revision International Classification of Diseases with the addition of residual categories. Recode 5 will provide a measure of continuity between condition data on the 1980 (and 1981) Public Use Tapes and data from 1982 and succeeding years when major changes will be made to both the acute and chronic condition categories.
