本书为考据历代僧侣生卒年代的著作,共收录两晋至清初僧侣两千八百余人之生卒或其相近年代.体例方面,因僧人同名者多,本书于僧名之上冠有地名,寺名,号缀名上,以便检索. 此次整理出版, 尽量以民国原刊本作底本, 对原本中明显的排印错误作了订正. 如蒋维乔著《中国佛教史》中, 人名、年号、著作等间有错讹, 均径予改正.
