Edition Notes

Rare Book copy: Contemporary mottled sheep binding, possibly by Christiaan Micke; gilt border to covers; spine lettered in gilt; bright green and orange patterned endpapers; green silk ribbon marker.

Rare Book copy: Copious contemporary notes on the front blank and endpaper; small sheet of notes tipped in; another, 20th century, small sheet of notes laid in.

Rare Book copy: Slim binding characteristic of the bibliophile philosopher, Hemsterhuis. All of his output was privately printed and distributed, often in specially commissioned bindings. The tooling on the present binding is reminiscent of those illustrated by Van Leeuwen (figs. III and IV) and identified by him as Christiaan Micke, one of the two finest Dutch binders of the day and the first of the binders employed by Hemsterhuis. Hemsterhuis had a particular penchant for wide margins, so much so that his works are frequently misdescribed as "large paper copies" though all copies are grand-papier. This volume enjoys the typical lay-out, with a small dense area of printed text and large margins. The text measures 9.2 by 4.7 centimeters, the pages of this copy measure 16.9 by 9.8 centimeters.
