Edition Notes

Things That Never Happened' is a photo book about collective memories of childhood pastimes during summer; moments filled with freedom and play. Preben Holst has photographed the children of friends, acquaintances and strangers in some instances repeatedly over several years as they explore their local forests, free from adult interventions and expectations. The book encompasses six chapters, spanning a total of 88 photographs. 'Things that Never Happened' avoids presenting a complete narrative. What is the story behind the forest hut Or what is Julie contemplating, while she lays in the long summer grass Certain images give the impression of moments that could be personal or formative, but their exact mythologies seem lost to the passage of time. Subject to fleeting associations that are not fully cognisant when seen from the rational vantage point of adulthood.
