The present text represents the French translation of the 198-page typewriten text kept in the Academy Library, the Manuscripts Section. It is manuscript no. 1 from the collection of this institution. As stated in a note accompanying the text by his son-in-law, Pierre Nicot de Villemain ... Ion Bălăceanu told both his wife and his son-in-law 'different events of his life'. The notes taken by Villemain during these meetings were immediately transcribed; when the story ended, the manuscript was 'examined' by the narrator; it was read to him very carefully and he declared that it really represents 'the exact reproduction of what he had told and had nothing to add or retract.'
