One hundred years ago, a shanty town in the best Wild West style grew up just outside Stockholm. Hagalund, as the area was called, had a motley population that moved in from different parts of Sweden. The houses that were built were of various kinds, from solid brick houses on several floors to very simply built villas. Here, the director lived side by side with the trash can without any significant conflicts arising among the inhabitants. Although some lived in misery, cohesion was strong. In a meadow below the motley urban development, Hagalund's industrial area was also established at the beginning of the 20th century. Here were tobacco farms, rope warehouses and other more or less environmentally hazardous activities that could not operate within the customs. Until our own time, the workplace area has grown, and is today a place where small industries, offices and creative businesses share space. Large parts of the area will now be developed to make room for thousands of new, much-needed homes. In the book In the shadow of Blåkulla we get to know more about the area's exciting history. We get to learn more about the buildings and people that exist in the area today, from an old Saab workshop and its 90-year-old owners to rock bands, restaurateurs, artists and world-leading researchers and about the future of the workplace area as a residential area. The book has a strong visual expression, with atmospheric new and historical images from the area
