The Roman Curia, the largest court in Europe in the late Middle Ages, was the place of longing for all clerics. Anyone who obtained an administrative office at the Curia had access to information and was able to win protectors - invaluable advantages in the competition for church positions in the principalities. An extraordinary career was achieved by a 'rope team' from Hanover in a special constellation: the Great Schism of 1378-1417 benefited for the first time German clerics, who then followed suit. Although citizens' sons, members of this group came to the throne of bishops and reached prelatures at cathedral and collegiate churches. They owed this to their studies in Italy, the protection of high curials and connections to northern Germany, to friends or relatives. Ten closely interwoven essays trace the lives of the individual members of this group and examine the conditions of their careers. The source basis for this comes from the Vatican Archives, regional archives and the printed sources of Northeast Europe. It is primarily about the rules of social mobility and the network of relationships that supported our heroes.
