Every time photographer Robbert-Jan de Witte passed the Bijlmer Bajes his curiosity was aroused. There was a crazy contradiction in the iconic building - open and exposed to the train track towards Amsterdam Central and at the same time mysteriously closed. Two years ago, in the run-up to the demolition of the Bijlmer Bajes, he was asked to make a photo series. Never before had it been photographed inside because of the privacy of prisoners and guards. But now that the building was empty, he had the opportunity to immortalize a disappearing piece of heritage. No people can be seen in the photos, but you can feel its presence through the traces that prisoners and guards have left behind in the building. The photos provide food to give you an idea of ​​what it was like in the Bijlmer Bajes. At the same time, the design of the building and its dilapidated state concealed an enormous beauty. For a short time, the building served as a reception center for refugees. Now the Bijlmer Bajes no longer exists. All that is left of it are the photos of Robbert-Jan. 'Bijlmer Bajes R.I.P.' has become a documentary visual report of a concept that is etched in the memory of not only all Amsterdammers, but of all Dutch people

Elke keer als fotograaf Robbert-Jan de Witte langs de Bijlmer Bajes kwam werd zijn nieuwsgierigheid gewekt. Er zat een gekke contradictie in het iconisch pand - open en bloot aan het treinspoor richting Amsterdam Centraal en tegelijkertijd mysterieus gesloten. Twee jaar geleden werd hem in de aanloop van de sloop van de Bijlmer Bajes gevraagd een fotoserie te maken. Niet eerder was er binnen gefotografeerd vanwege privacy van gevangenen en cipiers. Maar nu het pand leegstond kreeg hij de kans om een verdwijnend stukje erfgoed te vereeuwigen. In de foto's zijn geen mensen te zien, maar door de sporen die gevangenen en cipiers hebben achtergelaten in het pand voel je de aanwezigheid. De foto's geven voeding om je een voorstelling te maken hoe het in de Bijlmer Bajes was. Tegelijkertijd schuilde in de vormgeving van het pand en de vervallen staat ervan een enorme schoonheid. Nog even heeft het pand gediend als opvangcentrum voor vluchtelingen. Nu bestaat de Bijlmer Bajes niet meer. Alles wat er nog van over is zijn de foto's van Robbert-Jan.
