No. 1-3 and 6 preceded by originally composed Adagios; no. 4-5, by transcriptions from J.S. Bach's Organ sonatas (S. 527: Adagio e dolce, and S. 526: Largo). The Fugues are transcriptions: no. 1-3, from J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperirte Clavier (T. 1, no. 8, and T. 2, no. 13-14), no. 4 from his Kunst der Fuge (S. 1080, no. 8), no. 5, from his Organ sonata (S. 526: Allegro), and no. 6 from W.F. Bach's Fuge no. 8 (F. 31).
