Edition Notes
Title from masthead printed beneath head piece; number designation of issue printed above head piece.
Name of printer and date of publication from colophon.
Place of publication supplied by Sabin, Martin & Walter, Bissainthe, and Ménier & Debien.
Date of publication in colophon given as 1791; possibly printed in January 1791, although last date printed in text is 12 septembre 1790; must have been printed after December 28, 1790 and last date in text on issue no. 15 appears on p. [1] as 28 décembre 1790.
Printed irregularly from no. 1 - no. 34 (Mar. 1791)
Edited by the group of 85 deputies of the Assemblée coloniale de Saint-Domingue based in Paris; Bissainthe suggests that Bacon de la Chevalerie was the primary editor of the journal.
Nouvelles de Saint-Domingue printed in quarto format with either 8, 12, or 16 sheets, sometimes more. According to Bissainthe, Nouvelles de Saint-Domingue was printed in 32 issues, no. 1 - no. 32 (Mar. 1791). According to Martin & Walter, the journal was printed in 28 numbers, no. 1 - no. 28 (1790 or 1791); lastly, according to Ménier & Debien, the most reliable source for Haitian periodical publishing, the journal was issued in 34 numbers, no. 1 - no. 34 (Mar. 1791), of which no. 34 is only recorded in Saint-Martial Seminary in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Ménier & Debien mention that E. Hattin, in his Bibliographie historique et critique de la presse périodique français, erroneously lists 48 published numbers. Moreover, Martin and Walter cite another publication called Nouvelles de Saint-Domingue (Journaux 942a), one issue of́ which appeared in 1790 in octavo format and does not appear to be the same publication.
This issue consists entirely of one item: Les j'ai vu et les j'ai dit / d'un habitant de Saint-Marc, du 12 septembre 1790, closely modeled after a contemporary piece called "Les j'ai vu / d'un habitant du Cap", possibly printed in Haiti, not before 1790.
