Edition Notes
Virgules replaced by commas in title page transcription.
Constitutes a hybrid of the the seventh part, first issue and second issues of the third German edition of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634.
This work has been identified as a hybrid of the first and second issues of the first issue of part seven of the third German edition of the Great voyages by Church.
The first issue of the third edition of German part seven, can be identified by the illustration on p. 1, 2nd count, of the port scene with the buildings on the right.
The second issue of the third edition of German part seven can be identified by the illustration on p. 1, 2nd count, of the port scene re-engraved in counterproof with the buildings on the left; also p. 33, 35, 39, and 45 have had the margins extended in the upper outer corners, p. 49 and 45 also extended in the lower right-hand corners, and p. 49 and 51 have the margins extended on all four edges.
First printed as volume 2 of: Erst [-ander] Theil dieses Weltbuchs, von newen erfundnen Landtschafften / by Sebastian Franck, Frankfurt am Main, 1567 under title: Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller und mancherley sorgfeltigen schiffarten, which was also printed in: Neue Welt: das ist, Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller schönen Historien von Erfindung viler vnbekanten Königreichen, Landschafften, Insulen unnd Stedten, also printed Frankfurt am Main, 1567.
This part contains an account of the voyages of Ulrich Schmidel (Latin Ulricus Faber) to Brazil and Paraguay in 1535-1553. He is one of the first who wrote about that part of America. The narrative was originally written in Germany by Schmidel himself and published for the first time in 1597 [actually first printed in Frankfurt am Main, 1567, see translation note above] in part VII of the German edition of the Great Voyages. Two Latin versions were printed this same year, -- this, which was translated by Gotard Artus of Frankfurt, and one by Hulsius. Cf. Church.
Contains no illustrations other than the scene of port and houses on p. 1; Church states that the plates for this part were first published at the end of the text of part VIII of the Latin edition of the Great voyages, printed Frankfurt am Main, 1599.
