First Sentence

"This is the story of Ioane Papatiso, Polynesian, as told by himself. My publisher doesn't believe this. He says Ioane didn't write it. He says I did. He says I'm to take full responsibility for it. He insists. We had a long argument, and at the end of it he said, 'Look, you got away with being Nino Culotta for a while, but you've got no show of being Ioane Papatiso. You're the wrong shape, wrong age, and wrong colour. And anyway, nobody would be able to prnounce the name.' 'You might be right,' I said. 'Let's hear you have another go at it.'"

Dedication
I am a very small gentleman with no titles. So I dedicate this book to High Chief Mata'afa Fiame Faumuina Mulinu'u II, who is very large gentleman with four titles. I hope he will read it and say, 'Dear, dear; something should be done.'
