"Transcription of the Livro das canoas, a manuscript from the Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará, includes information from 17th-19th centuries and provides important first-hand data on people, places, and events of the Amazonian region. Descriptions of captured indigenous peoples in the Rio Negro and Japura rivers between 1739-55 are especially interesting. Mentions by name several dozen ethnic groups (and lists them on p. 17-18)"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
