At first glance, an unspectacular pit and its backfill are the focus of the interdisciplinary archaeological study. From the stratigraphic sequence it could be deduced that the construction of the pit, but also its filling, was already planned, so that a deliberate landfilling process is to be assumed. Following the evaluation of the ceramic material, this happened in the 1960s of the 1st century AD. In the first part of the publication, all types of materials and objects, including archaeozoological and archaeobotanical remains, are presented and discussed, while in the second part the cultural-historical classification of the ensemble in its entirety. The large amount of dishes and leftovers suggested that the remains of a feast could be seen in the pit backfill. One can only speculate about the motive of such a public feeding, a cena publica, but a connection with the owner family of the residential unit 3/5 in the richly furnished hillside house 2 in Ephesus seems obvious. There were numerous family occasions, including weddings and funeral ceremonies, but creating the toga virilis of male descendants would also be an option. It is possible that the statuettes of Togati and the miniature brooch found in the backfilling of the pit point to precisely this form of an age-old celebration in Roman tradition. The supplementary books to the annual books of the Österr. Archaeological Institutes are dedicated to the publication of research results of a non-exhaustive nature as well as the submission of findings and finds. Eine auf den ersten Blick unspektakuläre Grube und ihre Verfüllung stehen im Mittelpunkt der interdisziplinär archäologischen Studie. Aus der stratigrafischen Abfolge war zu erschliessen, dass bereits das Anlegen der Grube, aber auch deren Verfüllung geplant abliefen, sodass ein bewusster Deponierungsvorgang vorauszusetzen ist. Der Auswertung des keramischen Materials folgend, geschah dies in den 60er Jahren des 1. Jahrhunderts nach Christus.0Im ersten Teil der Publikation werden alle Material- und Objektgattungen bis hin zu den archäozoologischen und archäobotanischen Resten vorgestellt und diskutiert, während der zweite Teil die kulturhistorische Einordnung des Ensembles in seiner Gesamtheit umfasst. Die grosse Menge an Geschirr und Speiseresten legte nahe, in der Grubenverfüllung die Überbleibsel eines Festmahls zu sehen. Über das Motiv einer solchen öffentlichen Ausspeisung, einer cena publica, kann nur spekuliert werden, doch scheint eine Verbindung mit der Besitzerfamilie der Wohneinheit 3/5 im reich ausgestatteten Hanghaus 2 in Ephesos naheliegend. Familiäre Anlässe gab es zahlreiche, darunter beispielsweise Hochzeiten und Begräbnisfeierlichkeiten, aber auch das Anlegen der toga virilis männlicher Nachkommen käme dafür infrage. Möglicherweise deuten die in der Verfüllung der Grube aufgefundenen Statuetten von Togati und die Miniaturfibel auf genau diese Form einer Volljährigkeitsfeier in römischer Tradition hin. Die Ergänzungshefte zu den Jahresheften des Österr. Archäologischen Institutes sind der Veröffentlichung von Forschungsergebnissen nicht abschliessenden Charakters sowie der Befund- und Fundvorlage gewidmet. Darüber hinaus sind Workshops und akademische Arbeiten Inhalte dieser Reihe.
