The letter was published in G.F. Galleani Napione's Della patria di Cristoforo Colombo (Firenze, 1808) under title: Lettera II. su la scoperta del Nuovo Mondo. It challenged S. Canovai's arguments in favor of Amerigo Vespucci.
The present observations in defence of Canovai rely heavily on his writings. According to Melzi they are attributed to "uno della famiglia del Ricco, scolaro del ... P[adre] Canovai." Fumagalli ascribes them to Canovai himself.
