Signed at end: Gillis Joosten Saeghman. The real author, however, is Isaac Commelin, who wrote the piece as an introduction to his collection, Begin ende voortgang vande Vereenigde Nederlandtsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie; it first (?) appeared with Commelin's 1645 ed. with the special title: Inleydinge tot de Oost-Indische voyagien. Saeghman took his text from one printed by Joost Hartgers under his own name as introduction to his Oost-Indische voyagien (1648), in which Hartgers replaced Commelin's concluding paragraph with a notice of second volume, never published.
