Charles Shaw was born in South Melbourne, Victoria. During the Depression years he held a variety of jobs in the countryside until his interest in writing led him to a newspaper job in Forbes, New South Wales. He had several stories published by The Bulletin and eventually was employed by the magazine as an editor. His first publication was a collections short stories about the outback called Outback Occupations in 1943. After trying to break into a larger market, he realized he would have to broaden his subject matter, and he wrote his most famous book, Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, published in 1952. Shaw also wrote four detective novels under the pseudonym "Bant Singer".
