This is a perfect example of postmodern theories of simulacra. Nothing is affirmed. White Noise is a completely different book for each reader. I am not revealing my theory of its purpose, because that is point. There is no such thing. White Noise is the most successful example of simulacra I have ever read. I venture to say, DeLillo has driven home the point that reality is a fallacy by writing in a transcendental style. He symbolized postmodernity with transcendentalism, but somehow pulled off writing in a postmodern perspective that would have impressed all of Romanticism with his talent. He has removed romanticism and postmodernism from reality by exchanging their identities. The book is ultimately about the fear of death. It is not affirmed if that is death of human life, career, community, marriage, or nature itself. The book is off the charts with humor. I believe it is the funniest thing since Letters to Earth. Dont be fooled into believing what you think is the plot. There is no way of knowing; it is a mystery. I have an idea, but will reserve it for my literature class. |
