Dr. Wareham slept deeply – – slept until the telephone beside his bed began to jangle its way into his consciousness. Groggily he reached for the instrument.
"Cardiac arrest," the nurses voice on the line snapped. "Cardiac arrest, doctor!"
The Loma Linda University heart surgery team had come thousands of miles to Greece to donate its services to the Greek people. Now one of its patients lay dying. Had the American doctors' humanitarian gift been in vain?
The struggle to save the young girls life was but one of many incidents crowding the six weeks the Loma Linda University surgeons spent at the Evangelismos hospital in Athens. Evangelia was more than a patient. She was a life touched and changed forever by the kind strangers.
Herb Ford recounts the personal stories of four patients he met when he accompanied two of the surgeons, doctors Ellsworth Wareham and Joan Coggin, on a return trip to Greece to check on the results of the operations. The author tells of youth to face slow but sure death until open-heart surgery gave them another chance on life.
