Titl: German translation of - The physiognomy of mental diseases Refr: Waller 6684 Prov: Presented to the College by Dr. Blackhall Morison Note: Morison graduated MD at Edinburgh University in 1799, elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1800, and served as President of the College from 1827-1829. He was also a Fellow of the London college. After moving to London in 1808 he was made inspecting physician of the lunatic asylums in Surrey. Recognising the need for specialists in the treatment of the mentally ill, in 1823 Morison began an annual course of lectures in London and Edinburgh, the first formal lectures on psychiatry. He also started the first course of lectures for mental nurses at Springfield in 1844. Founder of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Insane, he also endowed the Morison Lectureship which is still awarded by the Edinburgh College of Physicians. The above is a German translation of a work containing a collection of portraits Morison used to illustrate his lectures. It contains 102 engraved portraits of mentally ill patients with brief accompanying notes regarding their condition.
