The first 9 v. by Gravelot, the last 8 by N.C. Cochin.
Engraved throughout. Each vol. has calendar with saints and phases of the moon, followed by allegories on various subjects with explanations on facing pages. There are 12 allegories in each vol. (but 6 for 1766, and 11 for 1769 in addition to a port. of Gravelot). The allegories are by various engravers after Gravelot and Cochin, the port. of Gravelot after Delatour. The subjects of the allegories are: arts, sciences, metaphysical beings, moral beings, the Muses, the elements, the 4 parts of the earth, the seasons, the months, man, virtues and vices.
Volumes for 1768-1781 called 4e suite-17e suite.
Each vol. individually bound in old red (contemporary?) goatskin, tooled with triple fillets along margins of boards; spines tooled in gilt, with title generally on a label; the edges gilt; most vols. retain silk ribbon place markers; many retains guard leaves before the ill. The set is in a modern drop-front box covered in red goatskin, tooled with double fillets in gilt; title on lid: FRENCH ALMANACS / 1765 - 1781.
Vol. for 1767 has label of Duncan Eaves on front pastedown.
