Edition Notes

Ms. codex.

Title from caption on leaf 56 recto.

Date of publication supplied by Dr. C.H. Berendt in his description of the manuscript tipped in between front flyleaf and caption title page. The handwritten date of 1733 following caption title is a later edition.

Spanish-Zoque dictionary, written in double columns, and compiled in 1733 from the one originally compiled in 1652 and attributed to the Dominican father Luis González. Authorship of this dictionary has also been attributed to the Dominican father Juan Pozarenco. The dictionary lists words and phrases in Spanish from "A" to "Xaula," followed by their equivalents in Zoque. List of words beginning with the letter "X" is incomplete.

The first part of the original manuscript (prior to leaf 56 which is wanting in the JCB copy) was apparently "Doctrina Christiana en lengua tzoque, sequida de un confessionario, y del modo de dar el viatico á los enfermos, en la misma lengua / by Juan Pozarenco, which is held by the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris. This devotional manual, including also several specialized Spanish-Zoque gloassaries, was dated August 22, 1696; however, the signature of Pozarenco was crossed out and replaced with that of father Luis Molina. Father Pozarenco arrived from Spain in 1688 and ascended to higher offices in Guatemala in the decade before 1711.

Attribution of the dictionary's authorship to Luis González is based on his role as the author of "Arte breve en lengua tzoque, conforme se habla en el pueblo de Tecpatlán [ca. 1652] held by the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris. However the vocabulary in this copy is dated 1792.

Written in double columns.

A description of the manuscript, tipped in between front flyleaf and caption title page, is dated July 1871 in Providence [Rhode Island] and signed by Dr. C.H. Berendt.

Edward E. Ayer Coll. Indian langs., Zoque 5.

Gates, W.E. Maya Society, 108.

Pilling, J.C. Langs. of the N. Amer. Indians, 4050b.

John Carter Brown Library copy bound in 19th century full speckled calf.

Provenance of the John Carter Brown Library copy: formerly owned by Father Clemente Castillejo, curate of Tecpatlán, and his nephew, Mariano Rodríguez of Tuxtla Gutiérrez: information from the description of the manuscript, tipped in between front flyleaf and caption title page, by Dr. C.H. Berendt; Fr. Luis Molina: ms autographs appear on numerous leaves throughout, one with date of 1795.
