An ethnographic field collection of sound recordings, moving images, photographs, and accompanying materials that document music, dance, and ritual in the northeastern Brazilian states of Maranhão, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and São Paulo. Includes correspondence between Harold Spivacke, then chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress and Oneyda Alvarenga, Director of the Discoteca (1941-1943). Photographs document field research and include images of musical instruments and costumes in the museum.

Dance documented in the collection includes dance dramas, ritual ceremonies, solo dances, group dances, and dances performed at Carnaval, reflecting native Indian, European, and Afro-Brazilian influences in the region before World War II.

Dance genres include Babussué, Brinquedo da Barca, Bumba-meu-boi, Caboclinhos, Catimbó, Côco, Reis de Congo, Tambô, and Toré.

Fieldwork conducted in northeastern Brazil between 1937 and 1938.
